Son Tra Peninsula at a glance
The Son Tra Peninsula juts into the sea about 10 km northeast of Da Nang's centre. Its highest peak reaches 696 m, and forest covers the slopes. The peninsula is a nature area with controlled mountain roads, a large Buddhist statue and wild red-shanked douc langurs, a monkey species.
Son Tra is one of the half-day stops that sit well beside a mountain day at the Golden Bridge. If you are comparing days out from the city, our guide to Ba Na Hills tours from Da Nang and Hoi An shows how the peninsula, the beach and the hills can share a trip.

Lady Buddha (Linh Ung Bai But)
The best-known stop on the peninsula.
The Lady Buddha stands at Linh Ung Pagoda in Bai But on Son Tra. The statue shows Avalokiteshvara, known in Vietnam as Quan Am, and rises about 67 m. Opening hours and entry rules can change, so check on the day.
Do not mix up the three places named Linh Ung. The Lady Buddha on Son Tra is a different site from Linh Ung Ba Na, the 27 m seated Buddha at the mountain resort (see our French Village guide), and from the Linh Ung pagoda inside the Marble Mountains.

Roads, hours and what is allowed
Son Tra has controlled routes, not a free ride on every mountain road.
The controlled mountain roads are open from 07:30 to 18:30 from March to September and from 07:30 to 17:30 from October to February. After heavy storms the peninsula can close for a few days and then reopen on approved routes only, so check before you set out.
| Route | What applies |
|---|---|
| Tien Sa, Suoi Om, Ban Co | No automatic scooters in general. The road was closed for storm-damage repairs in August 2026, so check its status. |
| Yet Kieu, Ban Co, Bai Bac | One-way route. No bicycles, automatic scooters or buses with more than 24 seats. |
| Bai Bac to the Heritage Banyan | On foot. Rules for vehicles beyond that point can change, so ask at the access point. |
For most visitors, a guided trip or a taxi with a driver is the simplest choice, because the driver knows which routes are open that day and which vehicles may use them.
Monkeys on Son Tra: how to behave
The red-shanked douc langur is a wild animal, and there is no promise of seeing one. If you meet langurs on the road, keep your distance and your hands to yourself. The rules are clear:
- Do not feed the animals.
- Do not touch, chase or catch them.
- Stay on permitted paths. Forest trails without permission are off limits, and so are fires and camps.
Keep snacks in your bag, close your bags and give them space.

Viewpoints and plan for a half day
How to fit Son Tra into your Da Nang days.
Start in the morning
The roads open at 07:30 all year. An early start leaves time for the whole loop.
Pack for the weather
Rain and wind can arrive quickly in the wet months, from September to December. Wear shoes with grip and bring a rain jacket.
Combine it with the coast
You can pair the peninsula with My Khe Beach in the afternoon and the Dragon Bridge show in the evening.
Son Tra and a day at Ba Na Hills
Treat the two as separate outings. Ba Na Hills takes most of a day: the ride up by cable car alone takes roughly 20 to 25 minutes, and queues, transfers and changes between lines add to it. Son Tra suits a half day on another morning or afternoon, so you are not racing the clock at either place. Our Ba Na Hills tickets page shows what a ticket covers, so you can plan the mountain day first.
